Top 5 reasons why I prefer the Xbox 360 vs. Playstation 3

5.  First Person Shooter control.
I think this one may be more a personal preference but hey, it is my blog.  I really had a hard time getting a feel for the first person shooter on the PS3.  I found I felt lost without a proper trigger button.  I would have to say that a FPS feels better when using a 360 controller.

4.  Menu Interface
I really like the new Xbox interface.  It is simple and modern.  In true Microsoft fashion it kind of feels like flipping through album covers in iTunes but even if it is ripped off it still works.  I do development work using a DOS-like system from the 80’s and I felt a little lost in the Playstation menus.  It just didn’t pop.

3.  Load Times
This is something that I think comes from the blu-ray discs.  They produce great picture but they seem to have a bit of an issue with load time.  This is something I have noticed even when using a stand alone blu-ray player.  Anyway load times suck and the PS3 seems to have a lot of them.

2.  Online Market Place
I have to say Microsoft does this very well.  I can go in, see what is new and fresh and grab what I want quickly.  Here is what ticked me off with the PS3.  I wanted to grab a demo of an arcade game.  Arcade games are shorter games that you can just download.  I could not find a trial arcade game.  I spent about 5 minutes looking and could not find them.  I just didn’t want to waste any more time on it.  The layout just wasn’t very user friendly.

1.  Installing
This was the hugest pain point for me.  After not finding an arcade game to download I did find a demo for a new game.  First the download was very slow but that can happen.  I chalked it up to a large download and maybe the internet was slower that day.  So after the lengthy download of a game that I obviously wanted to play, I had to spend another 10 minutes installing it!  It did not install automatically!  Why wouldn’t I want to install something that I just spent the time looking for and downloading!  That just blew me away.  Roadblock to game-play are just plain dumb.

In the spirit of full disclosure I only own an Xbox 360 and was using the Playstation 3 at my brother-in-laws place. I also have to say that I was a big fan of the first 2 playstation systems.  I also think that there are good things about the PS3 but I do not think they justify the cost of the system until things are improved.  The other argument that PS2 owners have is that they don’t pay for their online service.  I have to say that I am willing to pay if I get a superior product and in this case I find it vastly superior.  I have also experienced the hardware faults that have plagued the 360s.  I had a new, functional 360 back in my home inside of a week.  Frankly I don’t care if it breaks if I am without my system for less than a week.  It was hands down the best warranty experience I have ever had.

Wii woes

This whole Wii Fit gig is harder then I thought.  My first problem is the weigh-in.  Apparently my weight can shift plus of minus 5 pounds with ease.  It is very hard to figure out if I am loosing weight.  I would have to weigh myself at the same time every night wearing the same clothes to get an accurate reading.  This is hard to do.  Sometimes I can get my workout done before dinner and sometimes I have to wait until after.  This means that sometimes I haven’t eaten since noon and other times I have eaten an hour or two before.  So that is my first dilemma.  My weigh-ins have been going up and down like a yo-yo.

Second problem is drive.  It is hard to keep myself doing this.  Last week I missed working out on Friday.  We had dinner at a friend’s house and didn’t get home until late.  I did work out Sunday evening to make up for it but still I had already missed the goal I had set for myself.  This week was not good.  Tuesday I was busy cooking dinner and they DMing our weekly D&D session so it wasn’t until 11:00pm I had stuff cleaned up.  So I missed it Tuesday.  Wednesday I had ample opportunity to work out, I just didn’t do it.  I just couldn’t motivate myself.  I did get back on the horse last night though.  I really didn’t want to.  I felt very discouraged.  I do have to say I feel better today knowing that I did it.  My abs would tell you otherwise but I do feel good.

I know the workouts I am doing are not really intense or require too much effort but it is just so easy to sit on the couch and watch one more show.  While the idea of using a video game to train with is good, it can get boring.  I think that may be part of my problem with exercise in general.  I find it all very boring.  It isn’t fun for me.  I was hoping this would make it more fun but it really hasn’t grabbed me.  I am going to continue with this as I know I need the exercise but it is a struggle.  I hope something clicks with me and I start to look forward to it instead of dreading it.  If anyone has pointers or comments please post.

Wii Fit Challange

I have set up my Wii with Wii Fit in our spare room and I am embarking on a Wii Fit challenge.  My goal is to put 30 minutes into my FitBank 5 days a week; specifically Monday thru Friday.  I have set myself a modest goal of 1 pound a week in weight loss.  After 2 weeks I will adjust my goal depending on how well the first two weeks went.

Staying in shape is something I have always struggles with.  I work in a very low activity job, I am not really into sports and, as you can tell by the bulk of my blog posts, I am really into food.  I figure at my age I have a good chance of getting into shape and achieving my fitness goals.  If I wait until later in life it will only get harder and harder.

The reason I like the idea of the Wii Fit is that it has my fitness tracking, weight tracking and goal tracking all in one.  Also, because it is a video game, I feel comfortable with it.  I have been to a gym once or twice and I just feel completely uncomfortable there.  With this I feel like doing something familiar.  Also, if you already have a Wii, it is economical.  A decent treadmill alone is going to set you back $400.  It is also very economical if you borrow the game from a family member.  Thanks to Josh and Sonia for lending us the game.  The coaching is also very nice.  They are easy to follow and with the balance board you get on-screen confirmation that you are doing things at least semi-correct.

The first time went well.  Let’s hope the trend continues.  I will post my results here.  Please let me know about any of your Wii Fit or fitness experience.

Drafted

Well it has taken me some time but I finnally played a first person shooter (FPS) online via Xbox Live.  It was Call of Duty: World at War and I got my ass handed to me but I am learning.

I have played online games before.  When Doom and Warcraft 2 came out I played with friends over telephone connections.  I started using the internet for gaming about the time Diablo came out.  The first time I really sat down and played with other people was when I got into World of Warcraft.  It was fun but I didn’t see the light of day for about a year.

A little backgroud.  I get bad motion sickness.  FPS have a bad habbit of making me ill.  As graphics have improved it seems that I don’t get as ill as I used to.  This has been the primary reason why I have stayed away from FPS games.  I really want to get back on the horse though.  They are the most popular genre of online game and they are also quick.  A match lasts like 10-15mins.  You can play match after match but you aren’t commited to keep playing.  When I was playing World of Warcraft, you would start a quest with all your buddies and if you needed to leave, it would leave them in a lurch.  In these games if you drop off someone else just gets rolled in.  This is much more condusive to a lifestyle that doesn’t involve spending 8 hours online at a time.

My favorite genre is generally role playing games (RPGs).  I like the stories and the charater progressions.  One of the things I like about World at War is the progressions you make.  The more you play the more you unlock.  It works kinda like leveling up and I enjoy it.

Anyway playing the game was fun yet frustrating.  I think I would enjoy it more once I learn the mapps better (aka find choke points) and if I was working with a team.  I could have stepped up to try and get people to work together but as it was my first time playing the game I thought it would end up being a case of the blind leading the blind.

I do look forward to improving my skills and branching into this new (for me) genre of gaming.  See you on the battlefield!
